Confusion over kidnapped Anglican priest

2/6/2013

The kidnap of an Anglican Priest, Rev. James Achugbu has thrown Umunnachi community into confusion, even as they applied various strategies to know his whereabouts. Rev. Achugbu of St. Paul’s Parish, Umunnachi, was kidnapped last Saturday while he was driving home with his wife about 10:00p.m. Sources said the priest had visited St. John’s Anglican Church, Eziowelle with his wife, Uju and was going back home when he encountered the kidnappers. It was gathered that Rev. Achugbu was driving his Honda Accord car on the way from Eziowelle to Umunnachi, when the kidnappers drove past him and intercepted his vehicle. It was said that when Rev Achugbu stopped, they forced him into their vehicle, while one of them drove the priest’s car, leaving his wife there stranded.

The Arch-Deacon of Ogidi Arch-Deaconry, Arch Deacon Obi Ubaka who confirmed the kidnap told the newsmen that the kidnappers had since the incident been demanding ransom, but St. Paul’s Parish, where Rev. Achugbu was serving said they could not afford any ransom, but had rather been pleading with the kidnappers to release the priest.

The Arch Deacon said the parish had also been consistently praying for the kidnappers to repent and turn a new leaf. In his reaction, the Anglican Bishop of Onitsha, Rev. Owen Nwaokolo lamented the new wave of kidnappers abducting servants of God. He said the church would continue to pray against the development and urged those involved in the act to retrace their steps in their own interest.
