Nine Feared Killed in Plateau Reprisal

3/21/2013

About nine persons have been feared killed and scores of others seriously injured in an attack alleged to be a reprisal on Fili Mavou village of Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State. Two Tarok men were on Sunday shot dead at Kadarko village in Wase, while returning from Langtang, where they had gone to celebrate Tarok Day.

While the Fulani were suspected to be the killers, the Wase Local Government Area Assistant Secretary of Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Abdullahi Abubakar, denied it, blaming the attack on the aftermath of a misunderstanding among the Tarok kinsmen during the Tarok Day celebration.

A source from the area said that the killings, which started on Monday with the killing of one Hausa man continued yesterday when gunmen, suspected to be of Tarok tribe, allegedly killed about nine persons and torched scores of houses, including that of the state Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Idi Waziri.

However, varying figures of those killed, ranging from eight to 35, were given as at yesterday, while a source from Mavou, said:  “I saw the corpses of two Fulani adults and a young boy that were shot dead, and I was told that six other corpses were also seen in another part of the village.”

Confirming the attack in a statement, the Special Task Force (STF) on Jos crisis, stated that there was an attack on Mavo community in Wase local government area of the state.

The statement, which was signed by Captain Salisu Mustpha, added that “three of the suspected attackers were arrested and currently undergoing investigation,” stressing that efforts were being made to apprehend others
