Youths protest the death of Olufunmilayo Olayinka

4/8/2013

Youth of Igbeyin Street in Ado-Ekiti around the family house of the late deputy governor, Olufunmilayo Olayinka yesterday staged a peaceful protest over her death. It was gathered that the protest may not be unconnected with the allegation earlier raised by the former deputy governor’s elder brother and Sasere of Ado-Ekiti, Chief Olusegun Famuagun that some politicians in Ado-Ekiti were behind the sickness of his sister.

The protesters, who wore black attire were said to have massed at about 6.00am and were on the streets for about one and half hours before the police were drafted to the area to forestall breakdown of law and order. To prevent the peaceful protest from snowballing into a full scale crisis or hijacked by troublemakers, the road leading to the street at post office and Atinkankan ends were cordoned off by security agents, thereby forcing the commuters and motorists to take alternative road from the old governor’s office and Irona Area to the Old Garage.

Another adjoining road connecting the street to Irona Quarters was blocked at Isato Junction that led to Chief Famuagun’s house at Oke-Ori Omi area. The Police Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Police Command, Mr. Victor Babayemi, who said no protest was staged in the state capital because of the death of Mrs. Olayinka disclosed that the youth only staged a mourning procession in recognition of the values of the late deputy governor. He said the police command headed by Mr. Sotonye Wakama had to draft its men to the scene to prevent troublemakers from taking the advantage of the mourning period to foment trouble.

Babayemi said: “We only took preemptive measure to prevent hijackers from taking advantage of the morning period to perpetrate evil and this police action is going to last throughout the mourning period. “Our men have been able to control the situation and there is calm everywhere now,” he said.
