Lady Vero Onyia (Lady 1 Nigeria)

4/24/2026

Chief Dr. Veronica "Vero" Onyia, known as Lady Vero Onyia or Lady One Nigeria, was a trailblazing Nigerian businesswoman and philanthropist from Obinagu Udi in Enugu State. She is celebrated as a legendary figure in the Igbo community for her wealth, influence, and contributions to society.

She was the first  female member of the People’s Club of Nigeria International, a club recognized for its wealthy and influential members. Lady Vero Onyia served as the first female President General (PG) of her community and held the title of Ezenwanyi of Obinagu. She played a key role in transforming her village, Obinagu Udi, into what some residents call the "GRA of Enugu State" due to the modern infrastructure and mansions she helped inspire. Her home in Udi is a local landmark. It is noted for its unique, large structure built without traditional blocks. It features special architectural designs, including a "lion’s chair," and a large, well-kept compound. She was also recognized for creating jobs and helping graduates find work, as well as for her strong leadership within her family.

While her fame as "Lady 1 Nigerian" often overshadowed her husband's identity in the public eye, local narratives and social media documentaries mention that her husband’s grave is alongside hers within the family compound. Her title, Ezenwanyi Obinagu, is sometimes linked to being a "wife to a king" or a female monarch in her own right, reflecting her high social standing in Enugu State and entire Igbo land.
