Uniport 4: Police unmask masterminds of lynching

10/16/2012

The police High Command yesterday in Abuja, named one Coxson Lelebori Lucky (alias Bright), as the mastermind of the killing of four students of the University of Port Harcourt by residents of Omukiri in Aluu community of Rivers state.

According to the People’s Daily, the police also said it has picked up one Segun Lawal and four others namely, Felemo Solomon; Cynthia Chinwo; Ozioma Abajuo and Chigozie Samuel Evans – said to have played key roles in the dastardly incident.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said Lucky had raised the false alarm that the students were armed robbers leading to their lynching.

According to him, the victims had gone to the area where they met their unfortunate death earlier that morning to demand for money allegedly owed them by Lucky who raised a false alarm that the victims were armed robbers.

The police explained that 21 suspects, some of who are members of the community vigilante group, have been arrested for being closely linked to the barbarous act.

"Intelligence reports implicated the traditional ruler of Omukiri community, Aluu, Alhaji Hassan Welewa, as being the person who incited the mob to unleash terror on the victims. Further investigation conducted by the police indicates that four suspects, namely: Felemo Solomon; Cynthia Chinwo; Ozioma Abajuo and Chigozie Samuel Evans have been closely linked to this barbarous act", Abubakar stated.

The IG who spoke through the deputy force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba explained that a police patrol team had responded to a distress call that armed robbers were operating at the community.

He said that the patrol team that went to the scene of the lynching could not rescue the students from the mob as they met stiff opposition from them, adding that the team were pelted with stones. "Consequently, the patrol team called for reinforcements, but unfortunately, upon the arrival of the reinforcements, the alleged armed robbery suspects had been stoned and burnt to death, while the mob immediately took to their heels", he stated.

He said that investigation was ongoing and efforts were being intensified to track down others who were involved in the incident, adding that those found culpable would be prosecuted. Abubakar said that he has deployed policemen to the area, including detectives to assist the state police command.

He said normalcy has been restored in the area, while the situation in the area, especially in the university and other tertiary institutions are being closely monitored with a view to forestalling any untoward reactions.

The police boss appealed to Nigerians to see it as their civic obligation in the fight against crime and criminality, to assist security agencies in the discharge of their responsibility.

Abubakar stated that security was everybody’s responsibility and so, should not be left to security agencies alone, stressing that the cooperation of the public is needed to ensure that Nigeria is safe for all. He called on citizens who might have information on the lynching and other on-going police investigations not to hesitate to give such information to the police
