Governors will come together— NGF DG, Okauru

5/27/2013

Director- General, Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, Asishana Bayo Okauru, Sunday, said that what was presently being perceived as political quagmire in the family of the forum will end soon.
Reacting to planned moves to set up another secretariat different from the present one following disagreement on last Friday’s election, Okauru noted that they are politicians and colleagues, adding that they will come together and work as one body.
He said: “The matter will soon be resolved. They are all colleagues. I am sure, they will still work together as a team.”
It will be recalled that amidst political intrigues, speculations, scheming, backstabbing and character assassination, the governor of Rivers State and Chairman, Nigeria Governor’s Forum, NGF, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was last Friday re-elected as Chairman of the Forum.
Amaechi polled 19 votes to defeat governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, the only governor who contested with him to score 16.
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum which was established to among others, provide a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas, help strengthen and promote Nigeria’s federal system and promote understanding among governors and States, is the umbrella body of all the thirty-six state governors of the federation.
At the end of the meeting which lasted more than four hours, Director-General, Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Asishana Bayo Okauru disclosed that Governor Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari of Zamfara was unanimously voted in as the Vice Chairman, following the withdrawal of governor Olusegun Mimiko from the race.
All the governors except that of Yobe State, Ibrahim Gaidam were present and the election was through secret ballot. Before yesterday, speculations were rife that governors Ibrahim Shema and Isa Yuguda of Katsina and Bauchi were out to wrestle with Amaechi with the blessings and support of President Goodluck Jonathan.
It will be recalled that because of his leadership style and being dogged and forthrightness, Governor Amaechi has been having a running battle with the Presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP which culminated in a formation of a PDP Governors’ Forum fourteen years into the existence of the party, with Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom as the Chairman.
Soon after the announcement of the results, the Chairman, PDP governors’ Forum and governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio rejected the results and he was joined by other governors, just as those who opposed the outcome of the election have vowed not to recognise Amaechi’s second coming with plans to set up a parallel Secretariat.
