Oruku, Umuode communal crisis deepens

4/2/2013

Fighting continued in the war-torn communities of Oruku and Umuode in Enugu State throughout Thursday night as residents reported sounds of heavy shootings from mid-night till the early hours of yesterday but there was no official report on casualty.

Some of the fighters were said to have sustained bullet wounds in the latest gun duel even as the state police spokesman, Ebere Amarizu, was said to be in Abuja and therefore unable to comment on the development.

“Many people have deserted the villages because of regular shootings that have caused serious tension in the area. We kept vigil last night because from 11pm till the early hours of today (yesterday) they were shooting intermittently and it seemed the fighters were heavily armed with sophisticated weapons,” said one of the residents in a telephone interview yesterday.

The Oruku people had claimed that two of their natives had been killed while many others were injured while Umuode people on their part said they lost one life so far.

Oruku community, however, reacted yesterday to the claim by Umuode community that it overran their village, dismissing it as false.

In a statement by Mr. John Nnamani, Public Relations Officer, Oruku Town Union, OTU, the community accused their Umuode neighbours of launching deadly attacks on them last Monday, killing one Anthony Obinna Ogbu in his compound. Vanguard
